A LITTLE CONTEXT

About this savings goal calculator

Work out how much to set aside each month to reach a savings goal by a certain time, given what you've already saved and an assumed annual return. Enter your target amount, current savings, the number of months you have, and an expected annual return rate, and see the required monthly deposit. This mirrors the math behind the SIP calculator in reverse: instead of projecting where a monthly amount leads, it solves for the monthly amount a target requires.

How it works

With a monthly rate r derived from the annual rate, the required monthly deposit equals the shortfall between the goal and your current savings grown at that rate, divided by the future-value-of-annuity factor for the remaining months. At a 0% return, this simplifies to the shortfall divided evenly across the months.

Try these examples

01

Goal ₹5,00,000, current ₹50,000, 24 months, 6% return

Monthly deposit needed ≈ ₹17,444
02

Goal ₹1,20,000, current ₹0, 12 months, 0% return

Monthly deposit needed ₹10,000

Limitations & privacy

Assumes a constant monthly return and deposits made at the end of each month, with no withdrawals. Real investments fluctuate, so treat the assumed return as an illustrative estimate rather than a guarantee.

A few good questions

What if my current savings already exceed my goal?

The tool reports a required monthly deposit of zero and shows how far your current savings already exceed the target, before accounting for further growth.

Should I use my bank's savings rate or an investment return?

Use whatever rate reasonably reflects where the money will actually sit. A savings account and an equity investment carry very different assumptions and risk.

How is this different from the SIP calculator?

The SIP calculator projects the future value of a chosen monthly contribution. This tool works backward from a target future value to find the monthly contribution required.
